Post-screening Q&A with the filmmaker Deepa Bhatia and P. Sainath.
Filmmaker and veteran editor Deepa Bhatia’s first documentary, Nero’s Guests, explores India’s agrarian crisis through the work of award-winning journalist P. Sainath. In the film, P. Sainath makes us confront the India we don’t want to see, and provokes us to think about who ‘Nero’s Guests’ are in today’s world. Born from a compulsion to draw the media’s attention to the spate of chilling farmer suicides in rural Maharashtra, this moving testament to India’s poor had a profound cultural, academic, and political impact. It succeeded in forcing a national dialogue on extreme wealth disparity and systemic neglect.
