Ulrike Ottinger weaves her personal memories of Parisian bohemianism and the serious social, political and cultural upheavals of the time into a cinematic “figure poem.”
In this essayistic autobiography, Ulrike Ottinger returns to the Paris she arrived in as a twenty-year-old aspiring artist in 1962. Weaving personal memories with the city's cultural and political history, she revisits the Librairie Calligrammes, the cafés of Saint-Germain, the Cinémathèque Française, and the Musée de l’Homme. Through archival footage and contemporary images of Paris, the film reflects on the Algerian War, May 1968, and the formative influence of the city on the making of an artist.
