Born from a compulsion to draw the media’s attention to the spate of chilling farmer suicides in rural Maharashtra, this moving testament to India’s poor had a profound cultural, academic, and political impact. It succeeded in forcing a national dialogue on extreme wealth disparity and systemic neglect.
